The Colin Area Men’s Shed have won an Urban Villages Community Award in the ‘Celebrating Diversity’ category at a gala event in the Great Hall at Stormont.
The group, managed by Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, were joint winners with Kyle Thompson of Derry. The awards were not just about highlighting the projects, activities and people supported by the Urban Villages Initiative, but any project or activity that makes a difference in an Urban Village area.
A number of local groups and organisations were also nominated for an award including Holy Evangelist’s Community Hub, Colin Valley Football Club, Colin Safer Neighbourhood Project, Lagmore Community Forum, and the Uniting Communities Project.

The Urban Villages Initiative is a key action within the Northern Ireland Executive’s ‘Together: Building a United Community’ Strategy and the Urban Villages Community Awards celebrate the people, organisations and places making a difference across the five Urban Village areas in Belfast and Derry-Londonderry.
In total there were 30 Finalists, one from each Urban Village area representing exceptional people, places, organisations and projects that are making a real difference to their community across these six categories:
- Youth Achievement
- Education and Learning
- Sport and Physical Activity
- Celebrating Diversity
- Creativity and Innovation
- Thriving Places
