Project Aim:

To reduce the expressed feelings of fear, vulnerability and isolation felt by the elderly and other vulnerable residents living in the Colin, Greater Dunmurry and Lisburn area.

Project Background:

In a recent survey carried out in the area, it was found that there was a disproportionate level of fear generated by local incidence of crime and anti-social behaviour, among the elderly. This is not peculiar to this particular area. Recent media coverage suggests that feelings of vulnerability and fear among the elderly are a growing phenomenon. While much work is being done in the area to reduce levels of anti-social behaviour and crime, it remains the case that the fears that such activities engender continue and need to be addressed as part of a long term strategic response to the problems which face the community.

With this in mind it was proposed to establish a free support, information and alert telephone service for elderly/vulnerable residents living in the Colin Area.

The project is funded by SEHSCT and DSD and supported by Colin Neighbourhood Partnership.

What Good Morning Colin does:

Each senior citizen or other individuals who have expressed feelings of fear, victimisation or vulnerability, will receive a telephone call at a pre arranged time each day. The purpose of the calls is three-fold:

To check on the well being and health of the client,
To provide information on services in the area and upcoming events,
To listen to any concerns expressed by clients and pass these on to relevant agencies/individuals.

In the event of no response from the client, nominated persons/relations will then be contacted to check if there is any explicable reason why there is no response. If there are grounds for concern, the nominated person will call to the client’s house and check on their well-being. If access to the house is not possible then emergency services will be contacted to check out the situation.

Good Morning Colin organises a number of events throughout the year for older people. Including day trips, lunch events and seasonal activities. You can view these events on the Events section of the CNP website here.
